Crane Project, Stress Analysis, Team of 3, Spring 2019

The goal of this project was to make lightweight crane that fit the shown playing field and could hold a 1-pound weight and deflect less than an inch from the aluminum strips provided. The crane we constructed deflected less than .25 inches under the weight. In order to achieve so little deflection, we utilized L-bars throughout and an I-beams formed from 4 L-bars as the member where the weight rested because it is extremely stiff and acts as a rigid beam. In order for the I-beam to be attached securely and not rotate, we extended it farther back from the main triangle and connected it to two L-beams in tension. The 2 bars we added in tension also greatly helped to counter the moment our crane was undergoing. To save on weight, we only put support truss beams where necessary.
