Swinging Gripper, Design I, Team of 4, Fall 2019

For this project, we needed to create a lightweight gripper that could easily grasp and release an aluminum snowman. It needed to grip the snowman well enough that after swinging back and forth twice the snowman slipped less than 0.100" both vertically and radially. Our gripper design was among the top 10% lowest weight in the class. I produced our self-centering clamp inspired gripper idea that utilized left and right threaded rods. This design made it easy to evenly grip the snowman without risking tipping it. The threads in the screws also provided enough mechanical advantage such that the clamping force was consistently enough to grip the snowman securely. Using rubber bands gave us enough friction between our gripper and the aluminum snowman as well as made it easy to conform to the snowman's shape.
